On the 3rd of October 1980 Andrew Gilson recorded 45 minutes of The Odds’ set at Dudley JB’s direct from his PA Company’s (Spin-Off Systems) desk and, in 2023, Col Bennett (bassist with UXB) transferred the raw tape to disc. In December 2023, Andy contacted Keiran to see if he would like a copy of this “long-lost” gig from the iconic West Midlands venue. Naturally he was delighted to receive it. Keiran spent the next couple of months de-mixing the stem files, remixing and finally mastering to create this album.
You can listen to the album on Spotify, Deezer and iTunes/Apple along with many other streaming sites with downloads available at sites such as Gaana.
The Odds gigged extensively taking in The Welly, Reading Target, Club, Dudley JB’s, Retford Porterhouse, Fulham Greyhound and The 101 Club during this period of 1980.
The set includes a version of Saturday Night sung by its creator, Bill McKeown as well as the B-side Not Another Love Song; the B-side of Yesterday Man, So You Think; and their third and final single Fool in the Crowd with its B-side Nails and Knives. A rendition of Dread in the Bed also makes an appearance: Sam, the original vocalist, recorded his take on this song during his breakaway, solo The Odds venture.

Decades after their split in the Autumn of 1981, we are proud to celebrate the music of Hull band The Odds and remember the impact they had on the grass-roots UK music scene. Their energy and passion were contagious and can be heard and felt in their vinyl release, Foolish Men. The album includes all three of their singles and B-sides along with a collection of previously unreleased studio and live recordings all carefully remixed (where possible) and remastered. Those who purchase the album will receive a digital download as well as a CD including the tracks from the vinyl plus bonus tracks that make up the entire known collection of recorded works of The Odds.
